Senior IAS officer Smita Sabharwal has sparked a heated debate by questioning the necessity of disability quotas in All India Services (AIS). In a post on X, Sabharwal asked whether one would trust a pilot or surgeon with a disability, highlighting the physically demanding nature of AIS roles.
Her remarks drew sharp criticism from political figures such as Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and disability rights activists, who termed her views as 'exclusionary' and 'pathetic.' The National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD), Telangana, called for action against Sabharwal, citing legal precedents supporting disability quotas in central services.
Amidst the uproar, Sabharwal defended her stance, urging activists to also scrutinize the lack of disability quotas in other sectors like IPS and defence. She reaffirmed her commitment to an inclusive society, stating that her comments were meant to address an ongoing issue.
