BIS Sanctions 82 R&D Projects to Boost Standards Development in Emerging Technologies

Each project, with a budget of up to ten lakh rupees and a six-month completion timeline, goes beyond theoretical studies to include extensive field-level research.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has sanctioned 82 Research & Development (R&D) projects to faculty members from leading technical institutes, including IITs, NITs, and other experts. This initiative aims to further, diversify, and accelerate research and development activities across various cutting-edge domains.

Each project, with a budget of up to ten lakh rupees and a six-month completion timeline, goes beyond theoretical studies to include extensive field-level research. The projects cover emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain Technology, Medical Devices, Renewable Energy, Sustainability, Smart Cities, and Digital Transformation.

Through these R&D initiatives, BIS seeks to develop standards that protect consumers while ensuring the quality and reliability of innovative products and services. In addition to the 82 sanctioned projects, 99 more are in the allocation process, and 66 projects are available for application. BIS remains dedicated to developing comprehensive, up-to-date standards that reflect the latest technological trends and industry practices. These enhanced R&D efforts aim to safeguard consumer interests and contribute to a safer, more reliable marketplace in India.

As the National Standards Body of India, BIS continues to lead the development of Indian Standards for products, processes, and services, having formulated over 22,000 standards to date. Recognizing the critical role of R&D in standardization, BIS is intensifying its efforts to address the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements and evolving industry practices.

To integrate R&D into the standardization process, BIS has entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with premier educational institutions, including IITs and NITs. These partnerships leverage the vast intellectual capital of faculty and research scholars, promoting necessary research for standards formulation while supporting the research ecosystem within these institutions. This strategic collaboration includes focus group discussions on standardization subjects and detailed field-level studies of current processes in product manufacturing and service delivery.
