The Karnataka Cabinet has decided to rename Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South. The decision, spearheaded by a delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, aims to align with 'Brand Bengaluru' due to public demand. The move has sparked political debate, especially with upcoming Channapatna Assembly bypolls.
The Karnataka Cabinet announced on Friday that Ramanagara district will be renamed as 'Bengaluru South'. The rebranding initiative was led by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who along with his delegation, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil, the renaming gears towards aligning with 'Brand Bengaluru' and responds to the demands of the local populace. He clarified that while the district's name will change, the names of individual taluks will remain.
The decision has created a political stir, particularly with upcoming Channapatna Assembly bypolls. Former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy criticized the move, alleging a hidden motive to exploit real estate opportunities. Minister Patil, however, defended the decision, stating it would benefit the local community.
