Belgian Authorities Charge Suspects in ISIS-K Plot

Three suspected members of ISIS-Khorasan, detained in Belgium, have been charged with planning a terrorist attack, the state prosecutor's office announced on Friday.

Four other individuals detained during house raids across the country were released, with three freed after questioning by an investigative judge. All seven suspects, arrested in the Brussels region and cities such as Antwerp, Liege, and Ghent, are natives of Chechnya, with three charged as members of ISIS-Khorasan.

Prosecutors noted there were no signs that the suspects had selected a specific target and declined to provide additional information. Belgian media suggested the proximity to the Paris Olympic Games might have influenced the investigation, though the prosecutor's office did not comment directly on this. The French anti-terrorism prosecutor stated that no arrests or searches took place in France related to the case but did not confirm French authorities' involvement.

Notably, Belgium shares a historical context of terror, with the 2015 Paris attacks largely coordinated from Belgium and the 2016 Brussels bombings that caused 34 fatalities and 340 injuries. Among those convicted for the Brussels attacks was Salah Abdeslam, also a main suspect in the Paris attacks trial.
