At a recent ASEAN summit, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken took a strong stance against China's 'escalating and unlawful actions' in the South China Sea. Blinken highlighted the hostile actions of China’s coast guard against U.S. treaty ally the Philippines but praised their successful resupply mission.
Blinken also addressed other pressing concerns, such as North Korea's nuclear ambitions and Russia's stance on U.S. nuclear deterrence measures on the Korean peninsula. During the gathering, he met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss Taiwan and military ties, while also warning of further U.S. actions against Chinese firms supporting Russia.
Discussions extended to conflicts in Gaza and Myanmar, with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi calling for sustainable peace in Gaza, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong urging Myanmar’s military rulers to end the ongoing civil war. ASEAN reiterated its commitment to peace plans and condemned violence against civilians.
