Hezbollah Blamed for Devastating Rocket Attack in Golan Heights

The United States suspects Hezbollah of launching a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, causing the deaths of 12 children on a football field. The attack has heightened fears of a broader Middle Eastern conflict, with the U.S. and Israel blaming Hezbollah, despite the group's denial.

The United States on Sunday attributed a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to Lebanon-based Hezbollah. The assault resulted in the tragic death of 12 children and teenagers on a football field and increased the risk of a wider war in the Middle East.

Israel also held Hezbollah responsible and vowed a strong response against the Iran-backed group, following the attack on Saturday. However, Hezbollah disclaimed any involvement. The incident raised concerns about a larger regional conflict amidst escalating tensions, particularly due to Israel's ongoing war in Gaza, which began over nine months ago and has led to a severe humanitarian crisis.

The White House stated, “This attack was conducted by Lebanese Hezbollah. It was their rocket, and it was launched from an area they control.” Washington has engaged in talks with Israeli and Lebanese officials since the attack and condemned it as “horrific.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the U.S.'s support for Israel and its right to self-defense, while also expressing a desire to prevent the conflict from escalating further.

Blinken, speaking in Tokyo, highlighted the importance of seeking a ceasefire in Gaza to stabilize the situation on the Israel-Lebanon border. The U.S., Qatar, and Egypt are making diplomatic efforts to mediate, but a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains elusive. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated calls for de-escalation, stressing that no one desires a wider war.
