A 27-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances after allegedly being beaten by police, leading to protests by his relatives and neighbors here on Monday, according to official sources.
Shubam Sharma, residing in Bantalab locality on Jammu's outskirts, was playing cricket near his house when police raided the area in search of drug traffickers on Sunday evening, sources reported.
Sharma's family claims he was detained and severely beaten by the officers before they left the area. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died, and his body is now at the hospital's mortuary awaiting postmortem, his family added.
Protesters blocked the main road at Bantalab on Monday morning, demanding an inquiry into the incident and seeking justice.
'He was working as an electrician and was the only earning member of the family...we want justice,' said Sharma’s younger sister Shivani.
Senior police and civil officers rushed to the scene to persuade the protesters to disperse, assuring them of an investigation into the incident.
