Germany Urges Calm in Middle East Amid Golan Heights Attack

The German government has urgently called on all parties involved in the Middle East conflict, specifically pointing to Iran, to prevent further escalation. This appeal follows a deadly rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers last week, according to a spokesperson on Monday.

Berlin is 'certain' that the attack on the football field in Golan Heights was carried out by Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based group backed by Iran, stated a Foreign Ministry spokesperson at a press conference. The spokesperson also cited recent actions by the Yemen-based Houthi militia, also supported by Iran, as contributing significantly to the region’s instability.

The strike has heightened fears of a broader conflict in the region, where tensions have already been stoked by Israel's prolonged war in Gaza, which began over nine months ago. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has engaged in talks with various officials, including her Lebanese counterpart, in efforts to 'mitigate the situation and prevent it from escalating,' the spokesperson added.

German citizens residing in Lebanon, estimated at around 1,300, are 'urgently advised' to evacuate the country while it is still possible, the spokesperson said. 'We are very concerned about the safety of Germans on the ground and are making necessary preparations,' he concluded.
