Japan-Russia Tensions Rise Over Travel Advisory
The Kremlin criticized Japan's advisory against its citizens travelling to Russia, suggesting Tokyo was aligning itself with the West. Despite the advisory, Japanese lawmaker Muneo Suzuki visited Moscow for government talks. This tension underscores a long-standing territorial dispute preventing a formal peace treaty since World War II.
The Kremlin has openly criticized Japan's recent travel advisory, which cautions its citizens against visiting Russia. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, this move indicates Tokyo's increasing alliance with Western nations.
Despite the advisory, Japanese lawmaker Muneo Suzuki has defied the government's position by visiting Moscow for talks with Russian officials. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi reiterated that the advisory still stands and applies to all Japanese nationals, including legislators.
Peskov noted that there were no planned meetings between Suzuki and Kremlin officials. He also accused the current Japanese leadership of hindering efforts to improve bilateral ties and aligning with actions deemed unfriendly by Russia. The ongoing tensions are further complicated by an unresolved territorial dispute over four islands, which has prevented the two nations from signing a peace treaty since the end of World War II.
