MCD's Crackdown on Illegal Coaching Centres Post-Tragedy

The measures include sealing illegal basements, demolishing encroachments on stormwater drains, and taking disciplinary action against MCD engineers. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a stringent three-pronged action plan following the tragic deaths of three IAS aspirants at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. Measures include sealing of illegal basements and demolition of encroachments on stormwater drains, announced MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar on Monday.

Addressing the press, Kumar highlighted the widespread issue of poorly secured, illegally operated coaching centers across Delhi. He expressed sorrow over the fatalities and emphasized the MCD's determination to enforce regulations through comprehensive operations. The civic body has commenced demolition of structures encroaching stormwater drains, which had hindered effective water drainage and subsequent de-silting processes.

Additionally, the MCD has intensified the sealing of unsafe coaching institute basements, pledging to replicate the measures in other affected areas. Disciplinary measures have been taken against responsible maintenance engineers, including termination and suspension. Moving forward, Kumar advocated for designated spaces for coaching centers to operate legally and safely, preventing such tragedies in the future.
