Reservist Soldier Indicted for Severe Abuse of Palestinian Prisoners
The Israeli military has indicted a reservist soldier for severe abuse of Palestinian prisoners, involving beatings, blindfolding, and videotaping the abuse. The case comes amidst controversy and right-wing protests over separate abuse allegations. The detainee, reportedly a Hamas member, suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized.
The Israeli military issued an indictment on Tuesday against a reservist soldier accused of severe abuse of Palestinian prisoners. The indictment alleges that the soldier beat, handcuffed, and blindfolded detainees with a club or his weapon during transport, and videoed his actions, according to a military statement.
The alleged abuse occurred between February and June this year. This indictment follows right-wing Israeli protests after military police detained nine soldiers over separate allegations of abusing a detainee captured in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Army Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi condemned the protests, calling them near-anarchic. The protests highlight the ongoing tensions between Netanyahu's nationalist-religious coalition partners and the army command. The detainee involved in the Gaza abuse case was a Hamas elite unit member, now hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
