High Court Upholds Privilege Committee's Authority

The Madras High Court has directed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and several other DMK MLAs to respond to show cause notices issued by the Privilege Committee in 2017. The court upheld the authority of the Privilege Committee, ruling that proceedings regarding breach of privileges must be concluded regardless of government changes.

The Madras High Court instructed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and several DMK MLAs to respond to show cause notices issued by the Privilege Committee in 2017 concerning the display of banned gutkha sachets in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Initially appealing a single judge's decision to nullify the notices, the High Court reinstated the Privilege Committee's authority, stressing the need for proceedings to reach their logical conclusions, irrespective of changes in government power.

The bench emphasized that the procedural and disciplinary integrity of the Assembly proceedings must be maintained in the best interest of the people and the sovereignty of the legislative body.
