Sudan's Top Commander Survives Drone Attack Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Sudan's top military commander, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, survived a drone attack during a military graduation ceremony in the country's east, which killed five people. The attack comes amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces. Talks for a ceasefire are planned in Switzerland next month.

Sudan's military confirmed that its top commander, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, survived a drone attack during a military graduation ceremony in eastern Sudan, killing five people. The incident took place in Gebeit town, shortly after the ceremony concluded. Lt. Col. Hassan Ibrahim from the military spokesman's office stated that Burhan was unharmed.

Sudan has been embroiled in intense conflict for over a year, primarily between the military and the Rapid Support Forces. The military leadership has been operating out of eastern Sudan, near the Red Sea coast. Al Araby TV footage showed people running during the attack and attendees at the ceremony reacting as the drone strike occurred.

The assassination attempt follows the announcement by the paramilitary leader Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo that he intends to attend ceasefire talks in Switzerland next month, organized by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. The Sudanese government expressed readiness to participate in the talks but highlighted the importance of the Jeddah Declaration as a basis for negotiations.
