Political parties across India have applauded the Supreme Court's landmark verdict that allows states to make sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) for internal reservations. The ruling, decided by a 6:1 majority from a seven-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, was termed 'historic' by several leaders.
In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu noted his party's early efforts in this direction, while BJP leader Satya Kumar Yadav said justice had been served for the downtrodden. Similarly, Karnataka's CM Siddaramaiah called the ruling a removal of a major obstacle for internal reservations.
Other notable reactions included Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin, who saw it as a validation of the DMK's Dravidian model of social justice, and Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy, who committed to implementing the sub-classifications swiftly. National leaders like CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also welcomed the ruling, calling for immediate affirmative action measures by governments.
