British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the "tiny mindless minority" responsible for unrest following a horrific stabbing at a children's dance class, vowing to put a stop to the violence as the 17-year-old suspect was publicly named on Thursday to counter misinformation blamed for causing fiery clashes.
Starmer identified the violence as "clearly driven by far-right hatred" and announced a plan to enable police to better combat such groups. The measures include improved sharing of intelligence and facial recognition technology, aimed at preventing further violent outbursts that have resulted in numerous police injuries over the past two nights. "This is coordinated; this is deliberate,'' he asserted. ''This is not a protest that has gotten out of hand. It is a group of individuals who are absolutely bent on violence."
The comments came after police in different cities were targeted by crowds reacting to the stabbing that killed three and injured ten others. The suspect, who made his first court appearance, was named as Axel Rudakubana, in a bid to halt the spread of false information. Judge Andrew Menary deemed the decision exceptional due to the youth's age but noted that continuing anonymity could perpetuate misleading narratives.
The attack during a Taylor Swift-themed children's dance class has profoundly shocked the nation, which is grappling with long-standing knife crime issues, though mass stabbings remain rare. Far-right activists have exploited the tragedy to incite anger against immigrants and Muslims, despite the suspect not being an immigrant and his religion undetermined.
