At least eight people were killed and 28 others injured in an explosion on Mogadishu's popular Lido Beach late Friday, according to an ambulance service. Somali state media attributed the attack to the militant Islamist group al Shabab.

Dr Abdikadir Abdirahmman, director of Aamin ambulance, confirmed the casualty numbers, noting the toll could rise. State news agency SONNA reported that five al Shabaab attackers were killed by security forces, with a sixth detonating himself during the assault.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility from al Shabaab, although the al Qaeda-linked group has previously admitted to similar attacks. Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire highlighted on his X account that the explosion targeted residents during a busy evening at Lido Beach, illustrating the group's hostility toward the Somali population.
