Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met in Wellington today to strengthen the partnership between their countries. "New Zealand and Vanuatu have a long-standing friendship, cemented by the New Zealand-Vanuatu Mauri Statement of Partnership," Mr. Luxon remarked.
During their discussions, the leaders explored ways to further enhance their bilateral relationship, focusing on issues such as labour mobility and the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme. "New Zealand greatly values Vanuatu's leadership, particularly on international matters like climate change," Mr. Luxon added. The conversation also included topics such as New Caledonia, as both leaders prepare for the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting later this month.
The talks resulted in the release of a Joint Statement outlining areas of alignment and potential cooperation between the two nations. Prime Minister Salwai was joined by Vanuatu's Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Rick Tchamako Mahe, while Prime Minister Luxon was accompanied by Minister for Conservation Tama Potaka.
Additionally, Prime Minister Salwai is scheduled to meet with New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters to continue discussions on regional and bilateral issues.
