Bangladesh Protests Escalate: Students Challenge Government Amid Nationwide Curfew
Protesting students in Bangladesh have called for a march to Dhaka, challenging a nationwide curfew and demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. The unrest escalated after police clashes killed nearly 100 people. The government has imposed a curfew, suspended railway services, and shut down garment factories amid the protests.
Protesting students in Bangladesh have declared plans for a march to the capital, Dhaka, in defiance of a nationwide curfew, demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. This comes a day after violent clashes left nearly 100 people dead.
Army tanks, police vehicles, and security forces patrolled the streets of Dhaka on Monday, with civilian traffic virtually nonexistent. The unrest followed Sunday’s violence where police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands of protesters across the country, resulting in at least 91 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
A curfew has been imposed since Sunday evening, halting railway services and closing the garment industry. Students initially protested against a government job quota system, but their demands have evolved into seeking Hasina’s ouster. In light of escalating violence, the government has called for a three-day general holiday starting Monday and urged the public to comply with curfew orders.
