Tensions Surge in South China Sea Over Sabina Shoal Stand-Off
China’s coast guard closely monitors Philippine vessels around the contested Sabina Shoal, asserting its sovereignty over the Spratly Islands. Meanwhile, the Philippines counters China's claims, emphasizing its rights within its exclusive economic zone. The ongoing maritime dispute exacerbates tensions in the South China Sea, a vital trade route.
Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated as China's coast guard monitors Philippine patrol and fishing vessels around the contested Sabina Shoal. Beijing asserts its 'indisputable sovereignty' over the region.
Since Saturday, Chinese coast guard vessels have been monitoring activities near the Philippine ship BRP Teresa Magbanua, which China claims is 'illegally stranded' at the shoal. The Philippines, however, contends that Sabina Shoal lies within its own exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) emphasized their right to safeguard their EEZ, dismissing China’s complaints. The PCG has deployed inflatable boats to support the fisheries bureau and distribute fuel to Filipino fishing boats. The maritime dispute continues to heat up amid broader regional tensions.
