The director of the Russian military's main congress centre and a top Defence Ministry official were arrested on Monday on fraud charges, marking a notable development in an extensive investigation into corruption within the country's military ranks.
The Investigative Committee of Russia announced the arrest of Vyacheslav Akhmedov, head of the Patriot Park, on allegations of fraud. Along with him, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Shesterov, deputy head of the Defence Ministry's innovations department, was also detained.
Authorities suspect both men of embezzling government funds allocated for Patriot Park, a sprawling military exhibition centre near Moscow. The venue has been a site for significant military forums and international meetings since its opening in 2015. Notably, President Vladimir Putin personally donated for the commission of the church's main icon within the park in 2019.
