A local court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the kidnapping and raping of a 12-year-old girl nine years ago, citing the severe nature of the crime as grounds for a harsh penalty.
Presiding over the case, Additional Sessions Judge Sushil Bala Dagar found the 28-year-old man guilty of rape and kidnapping under penal provisions, as well as Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additional Public Prosecutor Yogita Kaushik Dahiya noted that the incident occurred in 2015 in the national capital.
The court's verdict highlighted that the convict, who had misled the minor into believing she was entering a legal marital union, committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault. The judge stressed the need for a sentence commensurate with the "loathsome act" to serve as effective deterrence. Alongside the 10-year sentence, the man was sentenced to seven years RI for kidnapping and two years RI for failing to appear in court. Additionally, the victim was awarded Rs 10.5 lakh as compensation for the grave impact on her mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
