The Allahabad High Court has granted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) one week to respond to a plea seeking a survey of Jama Masjid in Agra. The petition claims that the remains of idols from the Krishna Janmbhoomi temple, attacked by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1670, are buried in the mosque.
The petitioner, advocating for an advocate commissioner appointment for the survey, stated that Aurangzeb demolished the Keshav Dev temple and buried the idol under Jama Masjid. Justice Mayank Kumar Jain has set the next hearing date for August 12, giving ASI and Hindu plaintiffs time to file objections.
The court's order also comes in response to an application filed by the management committee of Shahi Masjid Idgah of Mathura, seeking to become a party in the case. The court's decision involves one of the 18 consolidated lawsuits dealing with the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah complex issue.
