Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to adopt a measured response to the suspected killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by Israel, cautioning against attacks on Israeli civilians. This message, relayed by Sergei Shoigu, one of Putin's top allies, was delivered during high-level meetings in Tehran on Monday.

During Shoigu's visit, Tehran also pressed for the delivery of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, according to two senior Iranian sources. The Kremlin has not yet commented on these discussions. Shoigu's visit is the latest effort by Moscow to emphasize restraint to Iran, all while condemning Haniyeh's assassination as a very dangerous provocation intended to trigger a larger conflict.

In Washington, the Biden administration has also warned of the risks of a broad regional conflict, stressing the importance of controlled responses from Iran and Hezbollah. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Tehran insists on a severe retaliation for Haniyeh's death, a sentiment echoed by sources close to Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Israeli officials remain vigilant, preparing for a potential escalation.
