The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Tuesday announced a heightened state of alert in many parts of the state following unrest in neighboring Bangladesh.
Senior JD(U) leader and minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary stated that the party is advocating for the rapid restoration of democracy in Bangladesh. The political crisis in Bangladesh arose after extraordinary street protests over job quotas forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee.
"We have discussed the issue with the CM. Our party's stand is that we are for the restoration of parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh at the earliest,” Chaudhary told reporters at the JD(U) office.
Addressing rumors of an international conspiracy, Chaudhary said, “I am sure the Centre is monitoring the situation closely and will inform the public accordingly. It would not be proper to react based on hearsay." He also commended the Narendra Modi government for providing "safe passage" to Hasina.
Chaudhary condemned reports of temple vandalism in Bangladesh, emphasizing that the desecration of any place of worship is deplorable. He added, “Certain parts of Bangladesh are not far from Bihar. As such, we have put the administration on alert with instructions to ensure no disturbances in vulnerable areas.”
Earlier, Additional Director of Police (Headquarters), J S Gangwar had informed PTI, “an alert has been sounded in several districts. The police have been instructed to maintain vigilance in close coordination with central paramilitary forces.”
Although no Bihar district borders Bangladesh, the state has a long, porous boundary with Nepal, often used by infiltrators. Additionally, Bihar's densely populated northeastern area, ‘Seemanchal,’ is particularly susceptible to illegal immigration via West Bengal.
