This move reinforces the group's radical path following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Sinwar, the mastermind behind the attack, remains in hiding despite Israeli efforts to kill him.

The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas confirmed the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as head of its political bureau, succeeding the late Ismail Haniyeh. The news triggered rocket fire from Gaza as Israel prepares for retaliatory measures. A regional diplomat highlighted that Israel now faces Sinwar in pursuit of a resolution to the ongoing Gaza war.

Sinwar, who spent many years in Israeli prisons, has emerged as a key figure after Haniyeh's assassination, which has heightened the risk of a broader regional conflict. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israel's chief military spokesman, attributed the Oct. 7 attack to Sinwar and emphasized Israel’s determination to pursue him.

The appointment of Sinwar was supported within the Hamas movement, reflecting unity. Israel perceives this development as a confirmation of Hamas's persistent adversarial stance. The war following the Oct. 7 attack has caused significant casualties, with attempts at reaching a ceasefire faltering amid mutual accusations.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Hamas officials, including Osama Hamdan, expressed a commitment to negotiation efforts previously led by Haniyeh and now overseen by Sinwar. Political analyst Hani Al-Masri noted that Sinwar's leadership signals Hamas’s continued adherence to its extremist stance.
