Increasing Tensions: Ukraine's Incursion Into Russia's Kursk Region

Ukraine launched an attack on Russia's southern Kursk region, met with strong retaliation by Moscow's forces. The regional governor assured the situation is controllable despite casualties and injuries. Both sides exchanged heavy artillery fire, and Russia reported Ukrainian forces incurring significant losses.

On Tuesday, Russia's defence ministry reported that Ukraine had initiated an attack on the southern Kursk region but emphasized a robust retaliatory response by Moscow's forces. The region's acting governor, Alexei Smirnov, described the border situation as 'controllable,' despite the conflict escalating.

Russian reports noted that reserves had been moved in to counter hundreds of fighters backed by tanks. The regional governor confirmed three fatalities. Smirnov also posted on Telegram that Ukrainian forces had shelled a border area, injuring two children and that the border town of Sudzha had come under attack.

The Defence Ministry's earlier statement, which mentioned that a 'Ukrainian sabotage group' suffered heavy losses, was later deleted. Meanwhile, Ukraine's military authorities claimed the destruction of a Russian missile, two drones, and a helicopter, while urging residents to remain calm amid the ongoing tension.
