Deadly Russian Shelling in Donetsk Escalates Tensions

At least four people were killed on Thursday due to Russian shelling in Ukraine's Donetsk region. The region has been a focal point of Russia’s gradual advancement along the eastern frontline of the ongoing war.

Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin reported that two people died in the residential district of Kostiantynivka, west of Bakhmut, which fell under Russian control a year ago following intense fighting. Later, Filashkin announced two additional fatalities and 11 injuries in Selydove, further southwest, where 20 multi-storey apartment blocks and six administrative buildings were damaged.

Ukrainian-held areas within the Donetsk region frequently endure Russian shelling and air strikes. Russian forces exert significant control over the region, which Moscow claims, alongside four other Ukrainian regions, as its territory. Donetsk remains a critical battleground as Russian troops target strategic locations near the eastern logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

The deadly shelling coincided with ongoing skirmishes between Russian and Ukrainian forces in Russia's Kursk region. Ukrainian troops breached the border three days prior in what Moscow described as an effort to divert Russian resources from the frontline battle in Ukraine.
