Dramatic Ukrainian Offensive Rocks Russian Border Amid Intense Fighting

In a significant escalation, around 1,000 Ukrainian troops breached the Russian border in the Kursk region. This audacious move, supported by tanks, armored vehicles, and drones, has forced Moscow to deploy reserves and raised concerns about gas transit to Europe. On Thursday, Russian forces clashed with Ukrainian troops for the third consecutive day after Ukrainian forces breached the Russian border in the Kursk region. This marks one of the most daring attacks on Russia since the conflict began in February 2022.

Approximately 1,000 Ukrainian troops, using tanks and armored vehicles and covered by drone and artillery support, launched the offensive early on Aug. 6. Heavy fighting ensued near Sudzha, a critical town where Russian natural gas flows into Ukraine, raising fears of a potential halt in gas transit to Europe.

Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have condemned the attack, with Kremlin-loyal figures labeling it a 'terrorist attack.' Meanwhile, the U.S. stated it had no prior knowledge of the operation. The conflict's escalation coincides with Ukraine's effort to gain a stronger position before the upcoming U.S. elections, where changes in leadership could impact support.
