Joint Committee to Examine Controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill

The Lok Sabha has appointed a joint committee comprising 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha to review the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The committee is expected to present its report by the end of the first week of the next Parliament session. This bill, introduced amid heated debates, has sparked controversy with differing views from the government and opposition.

The Lok Sabha on Friday adopted a motion to name 21 of its members to a joint committee tasked with examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Additionally, 10 members from the Rajya Sabha will join the panel.

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary and Minority Affairs, moved the motion, stipulating that the committee submit its report by the end of the first week of the next Parliament session.

Introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, the bill has stirred controversy. The government claims it doesn't interfere with mosque operations, while the opposition views it as targeting Muslims and undermining the Constitution.
