Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday opined that it would have been beneficial if Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the landslide-affected Wayanad earlier.

Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, he expressed hope that the visit would prompt the Central government to declare it a natural calamity and allocate necessary funds for relief and rehabilitation.

Tharoor stated, 'Better late than never,' while addressing Modi's recent visit, as reporters questioned the delay. The landslides on July 30 have claimed 226 lives and left 130 missing, causing widespread devastation in the Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattam areas. Tharoor stressed the importance of early intervention, recalling his emotionally charged visit last week. He implored the government to take decisive action with Modi's visit marking a turning point.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Tharoor mentioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's visit and the challenges in rehabilitation. He urged the Centre to permit MPs to use their constituency development funds for Wayanad.

Tharoor also participated in the Radiant Wellness Conclave, where he presented the Radiant National Icon Award to honorary Captain Sanjay Kumar. The event marked the 25th anniversary of India's Kargil War victory, honoring the bravery of the soldiers.
