The Centre on Saturday named T V Somanathan as the new Cabinet Secretary, setting a two-year tenure starting August 30, 2024. This marks the beginning of a significant phase in India's top bureaucratic leadership.
Somanathan, who succeeds Rajeev Gauba, is notable for his vast experience including his tenure as Finance Secretary and various roles in both state and central government. Gauba, who served as the longest-tenured Cabinet Secretary since B D Pande, completed his term this month.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Somanathan's appointment and also named him Officer on Special Duty until he assumes the role. Somanathan's rich background includes serving in the PMO and a PhD in economics, marking him as a well-rounded choice for this prestigious post.
