President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged on Saturday that Ukrainian forces are engaged in combat in Russia's Kursk region, marking Kyiv's largest incursion into Russian territory since the war began. This acknowledgment comes as authorities scramble to evacuate civilians from vulnerable areas.

The situation's gravity prompted Russia to impose a sweeping security regime across three border regions, while Belarus, an ally of Moscow, increased its troop presence along the Ukraine border, accusing Kyiv of violating its airspace. In his nightly address, Zelenskiy vowed to restore justice amid Russia's aggression, which began in February 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the Ukrainian offensive as a major provocation. Despite claims of halted attacks by top Russian generals, the conflict remains intense. On Sunday, debris from a destroyed Ukraine-launched missile injured 13 people in a residential area in Kursk, leading officials to expedite civilian evacuations. Although both Kyiv and Moscow deny targeting civilians, the ongoing war has resulted in thousands of deaths and significant displacement.
