Iran's New President Pezeshkian Unveils Cabinet Amid Regional Turmoil
Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, presents his cabinet to parliament for approval, proposing seasoned diplomat Abbas Araqchi as foreign minister and nominating Mohsen Paknezhad for oil minister. Amid the heightened regional tensions and recent assassinations, Pezeshkian promises pragmatic foreign policy and easing domestic restrictions.
Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, submitted his proposed cabinet to parliament on Sunday for a vote of confidence, as reported by state media. Among the proposed members is seasoned pragmatic diplomat Abbas Araqchi for the role of foreign minister during a period of intensified regional tensions.
Pezeshkian has been shaping his cabinet under the shadow of increased risk of the Gaza conflict escalating into a broader regional war. This follows the killings of key figures like Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, which have led to threats of retaliation against Israel. Pezeshkian, who took office after the death of hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, has garnered support by pledging improved international relations and promoting a pragmatic foreign policy.
The proposed cabinet requires parliamentary approval, with reviews starting Monday. Araqchi, known for his role in negotiating the 2015 nuclear deal, is poised to play a significant part if confirmed. Pezeshkian also nominated Mohsen Paknezhad for oil minister and Farzaneh Sadeq for road and transportation minister, the latter potentially becoming the second female cabinet minister in the history of the Islamic Republic.
