District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey confirmed the incident happened around 11:30 pm and that security personnel quickly controlled the situation. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. An inquiry into the cause is ongoing.
Initial reports suggest a dispute among kanwariyas and flower sellers could have triggered the stampede. The injured have been taken to nearby medical facilities, with six still hospitalized. Security personnel remain stationed at the temple.
