KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has called on local government office bearers to be more responsive to community needs or face electoral consequences. Speaking at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) KZN Sustainable Governance and Accountability Symposium in Durban last week, Buthelezi highlighted the critical need for sustainable governance and innovative solutions to address municipal challenges.

Addressing the complexities facing municipalities, including climate change, financial constraints, and the need for improved service delivery, Buthelezi advocated for a unified and sustainable approach to governance. "Our municipalities are the cornerstone of our communities, and their effectiveness in service delivery is crucial for the welfare of our citizens. The current challenges necessitate a re-evaluation of our governance methods and the adoption of new strategies," he stated.

The MEC stressed the urgency of reassessing the financial model for municipal funding, particularly in light of recent veld fires that claimed 15 lives. This tragedy underscored the need for municipalities to be better equipped for disaster management. Buthelezi emphasized the importance of revising financial support structures to enhance local governments' preparedness for future emergencies.

Praising the collaborative efforts in promoting accountability and transparency, Buthelezi encouraged mayors and senior officials to remain committed to sustainable governance. He asserted that the prosperity of municipalities hinges on the collective ability to collaborate, innovate, and uphold accountability.

"The primary objective is to forge a brighter future for the people of KwaZulu-Natal," Buthelezi concluded.

The SALGA KZN Sustainable Governance and Accountability Symposium brought together key stakeholders to discuss and improve governance practices, with a focus on sustainability and accountability.
