Ukraine Captures Wide Swath of Russian Territory in Bold Offensive
Ukraine claimed on Monday that its largest cross-border offensive captured 1,000 square kilometers of Russia's Kursk region, putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to pursue peace. With the assault ongoing and Kyiv maintaining operational silence, the move aims to distract Russian forces from eastern fronts.
Ukraine declared on Monday that its most extensive cross-border assault during the ongoing conflict had seized control of 1,000 square kilometers in Russia's Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was briefed by top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi about the continued advance.
In a video published on Zelenskiy's Telegram account, Syrskyi stated, "We continue to conduct an offensive operation in the Kursk region. Currently, we control about 1,000 square kilometers of the territory of the Russian Federation." He provided few additional details, reflecting Kyiv's strategy of maintaining operational silence.
The announcement came after Russia's acting regional governor of Kursk, Alexei Smirnov, estimated that 28 settlements had been taken over by Kyiv's forces. The assault, deep and wide in extent, represents a significant Russian setback. Putin condemned the attack as a "major provocation."
