A Mumbai court has directed police to further investigate funds collected by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his son for saving the decommissioned naval aircraft carrier Vikrant, amid allegations of misappropriation.

In an order last week, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S P Shinde instructed the police to carry out additional investigation and submit a comprehensive report.

INS Vikrant, commissioned in 1961 and decommissioned in 1997, played a pivotal role during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. The case, transferred to the Economic Offences Wing, was initiated based on a complaint that claimed more than Rs 57 crore collected was not deposited to the Maharashtra governor's office.
