The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's National Standards Body, has established a new department dedicated to environmental and ecological issues, named the Environment and Ecology Department (EED). To lay a robust foundation for this new initiative, BIS organized a workshop titled 'Standardization for Environment and Ecology' on August 12, 2024.
Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, highlighted the significance of the new department during his opening address. "With the Environment and Ecology Department, we are not only meeting the need for top standards but also developing a comprehensive action plan that addresses all ecological requirements," he stated. Tiwari noted that BIS aims to set standards that benefit both India and the global community and announced plans to host seminars over the next two months to establish leadership in environmental standardization and global sustainability benchmarks.
Smt. Leena Nandan, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), was the Chief Guest at the workshop. She emphasized the crucial role of interactions between experts, consultants, and stakeholders in developing effective standards. Nandan stressed the importance of collaboration between BIS, MOEFCC, and other parties to produce standards on various societal impacts, including ECO-Mark, sustainable wood practices, and Blue Flag Beaches.
The workshop saw participation from over 100 experts from across the country, marking a significant step towards enhancing environmental standards and practices.
