The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday transferred the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from Kolkata Police to the CBI.

The court has directed the city police to hand over all case-related documents to the central probe agency by Wednesday morning. This comes after the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the state-run hospital last Friday. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection to the incident on Saturday.

Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, presiding over a division bench, also appealed to agitating doctors to end their strike, emphasizing their duty to treat patients. Junior doctors and interns across West Bengal continued their strike on Tuesday, demanding better protection following the incident. The court criticized the lack of progress in the investigation and noted that the then principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, was not active during the probe. Ghosh has since been placed on long leave after resigning and being reassigned to another institution. The case will be reviewed again in three weeks when the CBI will submit a progress report.
