A local court on Tuesday sentenced a 34-year-old man to death for killing his wife, suspected of having an extramarital affair, and three minor children in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district.

The tenth Additional Sessions and District Court Judge, Avinash K Tripathi, convicted the accused, Umend Kewat, of murdering four family members in a case filed in January.

Labeling the murders as acts of extreme brutality, the judge deemed them to be under the 'rarest of rare' category, leading to the death penalty.

'The convict should be hanged by a rope around his neck until he is dead,' the court stated in its judgment, also imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kewat.

The court had reserved the order on July 29 after concluding the hearing, finally pronouncing it on Tuesday.

On January 1, 2024, Kewat strangled his wife Sukrita, two daughters Khushi and Lisa, and son Pawan at their home in Hirri village under Masturi police station limits in Bilaspur district, according to the prosecution.

The killings were driven by Kewat's suspicion of his wife's extramarital affair and executed in a fit of rage.
