In a significant crackdown on corruption within the ranks, seven Odisha police personnel, including three sub-inspectors, were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly aiding ganja smugglers during a recent operation in the Machkund region, according to an official statement.

A few days ago, a security team intercepted a four-wheeler in Machkund loaded with ganja. Subsequent investigations revealed that the police officers had colluded with the smugglers, accepting bribes to allow their escape while seizing only the vehicle carrying the illicit cargo.

"After receiving credible inputs about the police team's involvement in facilitating the smugglers' escape in return for money, an inquiry was conducted, confirming the allegations," said DIG (South-Western Range) Charan Singh Meena. "Over 400 kilograms of ganja were recovered during the operation. Following the investigation, those implicated have been suspended, and departmental proceedings are underway," he added.
