Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel on Friday reaffirmed the force's commitment to transparency in the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital. He stated that all evidence has been handed over to the CBI.
Goel admitted that despite a “sufficient security presence”, police were caught off-guard when protests outside RG Kar Hospital turned violent on August 15. Several officers, including a deputy commissioner, were injured as the crowd grew uncontrollable.
The commissioner clarified that the initial classification of the case as an ‘unnatural death’ was standard and not an attempt to label the crime as suicide. Goel also mentioned that 25 suspects have been arrested in connection to the vandalism during the protests, fueled by social media information.
