The trial of former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji in a money laundering case officially began on Friday in a sessions court. The prosecution, represented by Special Public Prosecutor N Ramesh, called Harish Kumar, an official from City Union Bank and former Karur branch manager, as the first witness.
The court proceedings focused on financial transactions involving Balaji and his wife, Meghala, with the prosecution presenting seven key exhibits. Judge S Alli, at the defense’s request, adjourned the hearing to August 22 for cross-examination of Harish Kumar and extended Balaji's remand, who participated via video conferencing from Central prison in Puzhal.
The case, which has drawn considerable attention, involves 22 witnesses. Balaji was initially arrested in June 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate over a cash-for-jobs scheme scandal during his time as Tamil Nadu’s transport minister. Balaji underwent bypass surgery following his arrest and has faced multiple bail rejections as his remand continues to be extended.
