Russia Captures Zalizne Amidst Advance on Toretsk

Russia's Defence Ministry announced that its forces have captured the town of Zalizne in Ukraine's Donetsk region, advancing towards the city of Toretsk. Zalizne, known by its Soviet-era name Artyomovo, was a longstanding Ukrainian stronghold. Russia continues its offensive while Ukrainian forces launch cross-border operations.

Russia's Defence Ministry announced on Monday that its forces have successfully captured the town of Zalizne in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region. This marks a significant development in Russia's offensive against the nearby city of Toretsk.

Known by its Soviet-era name of Artyomovo, Zalizne lies adjacent to Toretsk, a critical mining town that has long served as a bastion for Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region. Prior to the war, Zalizne had a population of around 5,000, while Toretsk was home to approximately 30,000 people.

Toretsk is strategically located near the frontline, adjacent to territories that were seized by Russian-backed separatists in 2014. The town has been a focal point for Kyiv's fortifications in the area. As Russia makes steady gains towards Toretsk and another stronghold, Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces are concurrently pushing further into Russia's Kursk region in a cross-border offensive.
