Rising Concerns Over Child Strip Searches in England and Wales

A shocking investigation reveals that police in England and Wales conduct a strip search on a child every 19 hours, often failing to adhere to protocol, according to the country's Children's Commissioner. The practice overwhelmingly targets Black children, raising substantial concerns about racial bias within law enforcement.

The issue gained heightened attention in 2022 when a 15-year-old Black girl was strip-searched by London police while menstruating, leading to widespread public outrage. This incident has become emblematic of broader criticisms and calls for more stringent oversight.

Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza highlighted that from July 2022 to June 2023, 457 searches were conducted, with many not compliant with statutory guidelines. Despite some reductions in the overall frequency of searches, significant work remains, particularly in addressing racial disparities and ensuring that children’s rights are not violated.
