A government school teacher in Hamirpur district has been accused of molesting a 16-year-old student, according to police statements on Tuesday.
Shashi Kant Sharma, a commerce teacher, was booked following a complaint from a Class 12 Dalit student at the Hamirpur Women Police Station, Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur confirmed.
Following the allegations, the girl's family and other locals caused a commotion at the school, reportedly assaulting the teacher. A case of sexual harassment with a minor has been registered under section 75 of BNS, section 12 of the POCSO Act, and section 3(1) of the SC/ST Act for insulting or intimidating a member of a Scheduled Caste.
Deputy Director of Higher Education Hamirpur, Anil Kaushal, has ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident.
