Turkish Drone Strike in Northern Iraq Sparks Controversy
A Turkish drone strike in northern Iraq killed three individuals, including a senior PKK member. Kurdistan's counter-terrorism service confirmed the deaths. However, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani contended two of the victims were journalists. The strike has been criticized for breaching international laws.
A Turkish drone strike on Friday resulted in the deaths of three people in northern Iraq, as confirmed by the counter-terrorism service of Iraqi Kurdistan.
The official statement noted that a vehicle associated with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was targeted, killing a senior PKK member along with his driver and a guard near Sulaimaniya. However, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani later clarified that two of the victims were journalists, not PKK members, labelling the strike as unjustified and a violation of international laws and Iraqi sovereignty.
Turkey, which has not yet commented, frequently conducts airstrikes against PKK militants in northern Iraq and maintains military outposts in the region. The PKK, designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU, initially sought an independent Kurdish state but now advocates for greater Kurdish autonomy and rights in southeast Turkey. Over 40,000 lives have been claimed in the ongoing conflict.
