Hong Kong Activist Ng Kin-Wai Stands Firm in National Security Trial

Ng Kin-Wai, the first Hong Kong activist to defend himself in person in a landmark national security trial, stood resolute on Tuesday, expressing no remorse over the alleged conspiracy. The 28-year-old was one of 47 activists arrested in 2021 for participating in an unofficial poll aimed at selecting candidates for the postponed 2020 legislative council election.

In court, Ng maintained his stance unapologetically, stating, "I will not apologise for the beliefs and values I share with my voters," while accepting responsibility for his actions. This prompted Judge Alex Lee to question Ng's remorse, to which he responded, "Correct," affirming his commitment to his political duties.

Born in 1995, Ng's activism roots trace back to his upbringing in Hong Kong post its handover to China in 1997. He emphasized the importance of a free, equal, and inclusive society, asserting his dream for a democratic system that safeguards human rights and the rule of law.

Facing sentences from three years to life under the 2020 national security law, Ng is among the fifth batch of convicted defendants seeking lighter sentences. Mitigation hearings began in June, following the conviction of 14 out of 16 defendants who pleaded not guilty in May.

The defendants were accused of plotting to veto the budget to force compliance with the 2019 protest demands. Ng clarified that achieving such a goal would have required broader public support, negating the allegations of a subversion conspiracy.
