The European Union has dispatched its election monitors to each of Sri Lanka's nine provinces for the upcoming presidential election on September 21. The deployment underscores the importance of strengthening democratic institutions through the electoral process.
The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM), initiated on August 14, consists of 10 experts and 26 long-term observers. Chief observer Sanchez Amor emphasized the need for a peaceful, transparent, and inclusive election, ensuring confidence among voters and candidates.
The observer teams will engage with voters, officials, and civil society across various regions. Their post-election report will provide recommendations for future electoral reforms. With 38 candidates, including incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe, and 17.1 million registered voters, this election marks a critical moment for Sri Lanka, especially following its 2022 economic crisis.
