Tigran Gambaryan, the head of financial compliance at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, is facing a critical moment in his legal battle in Nigeria. On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja deferred a ruling on whether Gambaryan, who stands accused of money laundering, would be granted bail. Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen, has been detained since February and insists he is innocent of the charges.

Federal High Court judge Emeka Nwete presided over intense arguments from both Gambaryan's lawyer and the state's prosecutor. The defense stressed that Gambaryan urgently needs surgery and his health has been deteriorating in prison, while the prosecution staunchly opposed his release.

The cryptocurrency exchange itself is also embroiled in legal troubles, facing tax evasion charges that it denies. In March, Binance ceased all transactions involving naira following a nationwide crackdown on crypto exchanges by Nigerian authorities, blaming them for facilitating a black market for foreign currency.
